Pengikut agama Islam merupakan kelompok keagamaan terbesar di dunia. Menurut sebuah penelitian pada tahun 2015, Islam memiliki 1,8 miliar penganut, yang membentuk sekitar 24% populasi dunia. [1] Sebagian besar Muslim adalah salah satu dari dua jenis: Sunni (80-90%, sekitar 1,5 miliar orang) [2] atau Syiah (10-20%, sekitar 170-340 juta orang). [3] Islam adalah agama yang dominan di Asia Tengah, Indonesia, Timur Tengah, Afrika Utara, Sahel [4][5][6][7] daj beberapa bagian lain di Asia.[8]

Sekitar 31% dari semua Muslim berasal dari Asia Selatan (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan dan India).
