The Big Read

The Big Read adalah sebuah survei mengenai buku yang dilakukan oleh BBC di Britania Raya pada tahun 2003. Lebih dari tiga perempat juta masyarakat Inggris memberikan suaranya untuk menentukan novel mana yang paling dicintai di negara tersebut sepanjang masa.^[1]^[2] Hingga saat ini, survei sepanjang setahun ini menjadi uji tunggal terbesar untuk mengetahui selera baca publik.^[3] Pada akhir survei, beberapa selebriti memandu berbagai acara untuk mengungkapkan buku favorit mereka.^[4]

Tujuan sunting

BBC memulai The Big Read dengan tujuan untuk menemukan "Novel yang Paling Dicintai di Negeri Ini" melalui pemungutan suara para penonton melalui web, SMS, dan telepon. Acara ini menuai kontroversi karena mengadopsi pendekatan yang diduga sensasional terhadap dunia sastra, tetapi para pendukung memujinya karena meningkatkan kesadaran publik untuk membaca.^[5] Masyarakat Britania Raya awalnya dapat memilih novel apa pun yang mereka inginkan.^[5] Dari sini, disusunlah daftar berisi 200 novel, dengan 21 novel teratas diajukan untuk pemungutan suara lebih lanjut, dengan ketentuan bahwa hanya satu buku per penulis yang diizinkan dalam 21 teratas. Karena pemungutan suara ini didasarkan pada novel, drama William Shakespeare tidak disertakan dalam survei.

Tahap kedua menyertakan 21 buku dari penulis yang berbeda-beda: dengan buku dari 25 teratas dengan Rowling yang diwakilkan dengan buku Piala Api, dan Tolkien yang diwakilkan dengan buku The Lord of the Rings. Kedua novel tersebut akhirnya menempati urutan kelima dan pertama; buku mereka lainnya yang ada pada 25 teratas yang asli juga memimpin di peringkat 22–25.
