Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) adalah seorang penulis Irlandia, dikenal dengan novel horornya Dracula. Selama hidupnya, ia lebih dikenal sebagai asisten pribadi dari aktor Sir Henry Irving dan manajer dari Lyceum Theatre di London yang dimiliki oleh Irving.

Kehidupan awal sunting

Stoker lahir pada tanggal 8 November 1847 di 15 Marino Crescent, Clontarf, di sebelah utara Dublin, Irlandia.[1][2] Orang tuanya adalah Abraham Stoker (1799-1876) dari Dublin, dan Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornley (1818-1901), yang berasal dari Ballyshannon, sebuah kota di County Donegal. Stoker adalah anak ketiga dari tujuh bersaudara, kakaknya yang tertua adalah Sir Thornley Stoker, Bt. ke-1.[3] Abraham dan Charlotte adalah anggota dari Gereja Paroki Irlandia Clontarf dan menghadiri gereja paroki dengan anak-anak mereka, yang juga dibaptis disana.

Karier sunting

Stoker tertarik pada teater melalui seorang temannya, Dr Maunsell. Dia menjadi kritikus teater untuk Dublin Evening Mail, yang dimiliki oleh penulis cerita Gotik Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Pada tahun 1876, Stoker mulai menulis sebuah buku non-fiksi berjudul The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland, diterbitkan tahun 1879. Soker juga memiliki minat terhadap seni dan merupakan pendiri Dublin Sketching Club pada tahun 1874.[4]

Pada tahun 1887, Stoker menikahi Florence Balcombe, putri dari Letnan kolonel James Balcombe dari 1 Marino Crescent. Mereka kemudian pindah ke London dan Stoker selanjutnya menjadi manajer bisnis di Lyceum Theatre, London milik aktor Sir Henry Irving. Di saat-saat inilah Stoker mulai menulis novel-novelnya, dimulai dengan The Snake's Pass pada tahun 1890 dan Dracula pada tahun 1897.
