William Kennedy Laurie Dickson (3 Agustus 1860 – 28 September 1935) adalah seorang penemu asal Inggris yang merancang kamera film di bawah arahan Thomas Edison.[1][2]

Kehidupan awal sunting

William Kennedy Dickson lahir pada tanggal 3 Agustus 1860 di Le Minihic-sur-Rance, Brittany, Prancis. Ibunya adalah Elizabeth Kennedy-Laurie (1823?-1879) yang mungkin lahir di Virginia. Ayahnya adalah James Waite Dickson, seorang seniman, astronom, dan ahli bahasa asal Skotlandia. James Dickson mengklaim garis keturunan langsung dari sang pelukis William Hogarth dan dari Hakim John Waite, orang yang menjatuhkan hukuman mati kepada Raja Charles I.

Hubungannya dengan Biograf berakhir tanpa bisa dijelaskan pada tahun 1911. Dickson menghabiskan tahun-tahun terakhirnya dengan tenang di rumahnya di Twickenham, Inggris. Dia meninggal dunia pada tanggal 28 September 1935, pada usia 75 tahun tanpa mendapatkan penghargaan atas kontribusinya terhadap sejarah filmografi modern.[3] Kelalaian ini diteliti dan dikoreksi secara mendalam oleh Gordon Hendricks[4][5] dan Paul Spehr,[6] yang mengungkapkan kebenaran atas kontribusinya pada banyak proyek gambar bergerak.

Warisan sunting

Dickson adalah orang pertama yang menyutradarai dan kemungkinan besar membintangi film dengan perekaman langsung. Pada tahun 1894, ia menyutradarai The Dickson Experimental Sound Film. Seorang pria (yang kemungkinan Dickson) memainkan "The Song of the Cabin Boy" dengan biola ke dalam megafon yang digunakan untuk fonograf di luar kamera. Film ini adalah film pertama yang menggunakan Kinetoskop, , perangkat pertama yang digunakan dalam film suara paling awal.[5]
