In the Name of Love" ditulis dan diproduksi oleh trio anggota produksi utama Motown Holland–Dozier–Holland dan memuncaki peringkat ke-1 di majalah tangga lagu singel pop versi Billboard di Amerika Serikat dari tanggal 27 Maret 1965 hingga 3 April 1965,[1][2] serta memuncaki pula tangga lagu peringkat ke-2 di majalah yang sama khusus untuk genre soul.
Selain itu, majalah Billboard menempatkan lagu ini ke peringkat ke-38 dengan daftar berjudul 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time.[3] "Stop! In the Name of Love" menempati peringkat ke-56 di The Top 100 Digital Motown Chart versi BBC yang berdasarkan lagu rilisan label rekaman Motown dengan unduhan dan penyiaran paling banyak di Britania Raya sepanjang masa.[4]
