Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha (Gugu Mbatha-Raw diucapkan /ˈɡuːɡuː mmˈbɑːtə rɔː/ lahir 21 April 1983; umur 36 tahunatau ),[1] adalah Aktris panggung dan Film berkebangsaan Inggris.[2][3][4]

Berkarya di pertelevisian Inggris, dia kali pertama tampil dalam Doctor Who, bermain sebagai Tish Jones, kakak dari Martha Jones. Dia banyak menerima tawaran pekerjaan produksi film Amerika Serikat, dimulai sebagai pemeran pendukung dalam film komedi arahan Tom Hanks berjudul Larry Crowne, dan membintangi serial televisi Undercovers dan Touch. Dia mendapatkan pengakuan atas penampilan-penampilannya di Inggris dalam drama Belle (2013) dan drama romantik Beyond the Lights (2014), dan juga masuk nominasi beberapa penghargaan.

Tahun 2015, Mbatha-Raw memainkan naskah karya Jessica Swale dalam Nell Gwynn, sebagai seorang aktris dan selingkuhan King Charles II of England.[5] Namanya masuk nominasi dalam Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress atas penampilannya.[6]

Latar belakangSunting

Mbatha-Raw lahir di Oxford, Inggris, 1983, tumbuh dan besar di Witney Oxfordshire. Merupakan puteri dari Patrick Mbatha, seorang dokter asli Afrika Selatan dan Anne Raw, perawat asal Inggris.[7][8][9]

Mbatha-Raw menempuh pendidikan di Henry Box School dan aktif di National Youth Theatre, lantaran ketertarikannya di bidang keaktrisan, tari, dan musik teater sejak usia dini.[10] Tahun 2001, dia pindah ke London untuk berlatih drama di Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]
