Sebagai seorang civitas akademis, Prof. Wirat merupakan Guru Besar Fakultas Teknik Mesin dan Dirgantara ITB. Prof. Wirat mendapatkan gelar Sarjana Teknik Mesin di Institut Teknolgi Bandung, gelar Master Science in Engineering Mechanics, University of Kentucky, U.S.A. dan gelar doktornya di University of Kentucky, U.S.A. Ia memfokuskan pada bidang keahlian dan penelitian terkait Energy infrastructure, Design for Surface Facilities in Oil & Gas Industry, Renewable Energy, Design for Geothermal production facilities and power plant, Piping & Pipeline Integrity, Mechanical Integrity, Risk Assessment & RBI, Mechanical Structures, Mechanical Design, Stress Analysis, Solid Mechanics, Advanced Materials.

Hasil dari berbagai penelitian tersebut telah dipresentasikannya di berbagai seminar di dalam dan luar negeri serta dipublikasikan setidaknya dalam 75 jurnal internasional dan nasional, maupun sejumlah media massa.

Prof. Wirat juga pernah berkiprah sebagai Komisaris Utama PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN) tahun 2018-2020 dan birokrat senior di Kementerian ESDM sejak 2013 hingga 2020. Pada tahun 2017-2020, Prof. Wirat menjabat sebagai Kepala Badan Pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia (BPSDM), Kementerian ESDM, dan Direktur Jenderal Minyak dan Gas Bumi, Kementerian ESDM, pada tahun 2015-2017.

Kiprahnya di Kementerian ESDM, mengantarkan beliau mendapat penghargaan Dharma Karya Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral UTAMA dari Menteri ESDM di tahun 2020.
