Paul Albert Laurens

Paul Albert Laurens (18 Januari 1870 – 27 September 1934) adalah seorang pelukis berkebangsaan Prancis.

Biografi

Laurens adalah putra tertua pelukis Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921), yang berasal dari keluarga sederhana, dan istrinya, Madeleine Willemsens (1848-1913). Laurens lahir di Rue Taranne, di luar Boulevard Saint-Germain di Paris, tempat orang tuanya pindah. Sadar akan Perang Prancis-Prusia tahun 1870, ayahnya dengan cepat memindahkan keluarganya kembali ke desa asalnya yang relatif aman, Fourquevaux di departemen Haute-Garonne di barat daya Prancis. Rumah keluarga masih dapat ditemukan di desa hari ini, dekat gereja.

Adik laki-laki Laurens, Jean-Pierre Laurens (1875-1932), juga seorang pelukis. Laurens bersekolah di Rue d'Assas di mana dia bertemu, antara lain, André Gide dan dengan Gide dia melakukan perjalanan pertamanya ke Biskra, Aljazair pada tahun 1894. Sementara itu, di 1890 Académie Julian mendirikan bengkel baru di 31 Rue du Dragon and Laurens dan saudaranya diajar di sana bersama Paul Landowski dan Henri Bouchard.

Pada tanggal 18 Oktober 1893 Laurens berlayar dari Marseille dengan temannya Gide menuju Tunis, dan dari sana ke Sousse. Pada Januari 1894 Laurens dan Gide menetap di Biskra, di bekas rumah Bapa Kulit Putih (Misionaris Afrika). Nyonya Gide, yang prihatin dengan kesehatan putranya, juga bergabung dengan mereka.

Laurens menikah dengan Bertha Guerin pada tahun 1900 dan pindah bersamanya ke 126 Boulevard du Montparnasse, di gedung yang sama dengan pelukis Émile-René Ménard.

Sekitar tahun 1912, dengan ayahnya dan seorang muridnya, Ulysses Ravaut, Laurens bekerja untuk mendekorasi Capitole atas permintaan kotamadya Toulouse. Selama Perang Dunia Pertama, ia bekerja dengan seniman lain termasuk Dunoyer de Segonzac, Forain, Georges Paul Leroux (saudara dari Auguste Leroux), Abel Truchet, Henri Calot, Avy dan Devambez tentang kamuflase dalam angkatan bersenjata dan pekerjaan mereka menjadi model bagi tentara Sekutu.

Karir akademik

Laurens adalah Profesor Menggambar di École Polytechnique antara tahun 1919 dan 1934. diangkat sebagai anggota Akademi Seni Rupa Prancis pada tahun 1933.
