Yamagumo adalah kapal perusak keenam dari kelas Asashio. Yamagumo memiliki ciri berupa rambut panjang berwarna abu-abu dengan ikat rambut berwarna hijau di gamenya. Pada saat Perang Pasifik pecah, ia ditugaskan pada 3rd Special Attack Force yang bertugas menginvasi Filipina. Pada 31 Desember, ia harus direpair akibat terkena mine hingga Agustus 1942. Kemudian ia dalam beberapa konvoi escort, termasuk diantaranya mengawal Yamato dan Musashi. Ia berjasa dalam menenggelamkan kapal selam USS Sculpin pada tanggal 19 November 1943. Hingga..
 
Tanggal 22 Oktober 1944. Pertempuran Teluk Leyte dimulai. Pada saat itu Yamagumo tergabung dalam armada yang dipimpin oleh Admiral Shouji Nishimura (dikenal dengan Nishimura Kantai). Bersama Fusou, Yamashiro, Mogami, Michishio, Asagumo, dan Shigure, Yamagumo berangkat dari Brunei. Sesampainya di Selat Surigao pada dinihari 25 Oktober 1944, mereka disambut oleh US 7th Fleet Support Force. Terjadi pertempuran dikenal dengan nama Battle of Surigao Strait. Pertempuran ini lebih tepat digambarkan sebagai pembantaian. Yamagumo sendiri tenggelam setelah ditorpedo oleh USS McDermut. Dari pertempuran tersebut hanya Shigure yang berhasil selamat.
