Frederick Cornwallis Conybeare

Frederick Cornwallis Conybeare, FBA (14 September 1856 –  9 Januari 1924) adalah seorang orientalis Inggris, Fellow dari University College, Oxford, dan Profesor Teologi di Universitas Oxford.

Biography

Conybeare lahir di Croydon, Surrey, anak ketiga dari seorang pengacara, John Charles Conybeare, dan cucu dari ahli geologi William Daniel Conybeare. Ia berminat dalam Order of Corporate Reunion, suatu organisasi Gereja Katolik Lama, menjadi Uskup di dalamnya pada tahun 1894. Juga pada tahun 1890-an ia menulis sebuah buku tentang Skandal Dreyfus, sebagai Dreyfusard, dan menerjemahkan Perjanjian Salomo dan teks Kristen awal lainnya. Juga, ia membuat karya berpengaruh mengenai Barlaam dan Yosafat. Dia adalah otoritas mengenai Gereja Armenia.

Dari tahun 1904 hingga tahun 1915 ia adalah anggota dari Rasionalis Press Association, yang didirikan pada tahun 1899.

Salah satu karya paling terkenal adalah Myth, Magic, and Morals (Mitos, Sihir, dan Moral) dari tahun 1909, kemudian diterbitkan kembali dengan judul The Origins of Christianity (Asal-Usul Kekristenan). Ini telah dibaca baik sebagai kritik keras dari Teori mitos Yesus, membuat Conybeare pendukung historis Yesus; tetapi juga sebagai serangan terhadap aspek-aspek dari Kristen ortodoks itu sendiri. Ia kembali kemudian pada tahun 1914 untuk membuat serangan langsung pada pendukung terkemuka Teori mitos Yesus saat itu.

Dia meninggal pada tahun 1924 berusia 68 dan dimakamkan di Brompton Cemetery, London.

Istrinya Mary Emily adalah seorang penerjemah dari Wilhelm Scherer.
