Planet di luar Neptunus
Setelah penemuan planet Neptunus pada 1846, terhadap spekulasi yang menyatakan bahwa terdapat planet lain yang berada di luar orbitnya. Pencarian dimulai pada pertengahan abad ke-19 dan pengkulminasian dimulai pada abad ke-20 ketika Percival Lowell bertanya tentang Planet X.

Pluto yang ditemukan oleh Clyde Tombaugh pada 1930 menguatkan hipotesis Lowell, dan Pluto secara resmi disebut sebnagai planet kesembilan. Pada 1978, Pluto dianggap terlalu kecil karena gravitasinya berdampak terhadap planet-planet raksasa yang mengakibatkan pencarian planet kesepuluh secara besar-besaran.
Meskipun sejumlah besar anggota dari kelompok tersebut awalnya menyebutnya sebagai planet, pada 2006, International Astronomical Union mengklasifikasikan ulang Pluto dan tetangga-tetangga terbesarnya sebagai planet katai, membuat Neptunus menjadi planet terjauh yang diketahui di Tata Surya.[1]
