Raja Perancis [[Charles si Sederhana]] dari [[wangsa Carolingia]] memberikan daerah ini kepada [[Rollo dari Normandia|Rollo]], pemimpin sekelompok kaum [[Viking]] yang juga dikenal dengan sebutan ''Northmen'' ([[Bahasa Latin]]: ''Normanni''). Rollo kemudian menjadi seorang ''duke'' ([[vazal]] atau "adipati") di bawahan kekuasaannya. Daerah Normandia tersebut saat itu berada di provinsi [[Neustria]] dan bagian dari [[Brittany|Breton]] di pantai utara [[Perancis]].
