Asal mula nama Kefir diduga dari dari bahasa Turki 'Keif', yang berarti keadaan atau kondisi yang baik. Dari wujudnya, kefir berbeda dari [[yoghurt]] yang juga merupakan hasil fermentasi susu. Kefir berwujud cair, sedang yoghurt berwujud kental.
