In the decades following Mozart's death there were several attempts to catalog his compositions, but it was not until 1862 that Ludwig von Köchel succeeded in this enterprise. Köchel's book of 551 pages was entitled ''Chronologisch - thematisches Verzeichnis sämtlicher Tonwerke Wolfgang Amadé Mozarts'' (''Chronological - Thematic Catalogue of the Complete Musical Works of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart''). The catalogue included the opening bars of each piece (a so - called incipit).
Köchel attempted to arrange the works in [[chronological order]], but the dates of many of the pieces written prior to 1784 had to be guessed at. Since the work of Köchel many more pieces have been found, re - attributed, or even re - dated, causing eight revisions of the catalog. Some of the subsequent editions, especially the third by [[Alfred Einstein]] (1937), and the sixth by [[Franz Giegling]], [[Gerd Sievers]] and [[Alexander Weinmann]] (1964), included many corrections.
Even so, Köchel's numbers provide a quick way to get a rough idea of when Mozart wrote a particular work. For K<sub>n</sub> > 100, you can divide it by 25 and add 10, giving a quick estimate for Mozart's age at the time he wrote it. If you add 1756, it gives you an idea of the year.
To maintain as much of the original numbering of the list as possible while reordering in the revised chronological sequence, letters were added to the new numbers. The following list shows Köchel's original designation (''K<SUP>1</SUP>'') and the sixth revision (''K<SUP>6</SUP>'').
