Sundance dimulai pada 1978 sebagai [[Utah/US Film Festival]] dalam usaha menarik lebih banyak pembuat film ke Utah. Setelah [[Robert Redford]] mulai terlibat, festival ini dipindahkan dari September ke Januari atas anjuran [[Sydney Pollack]]. Pada 1991 festival ini diberi nama baru ''Sundance Film Festival''. Banyak pembuat film independen, seperti [[Kevin Smith]], [[Robert Rodriguez]], [[Quentin Tarantino]], [[Steven Soderbergh]], [[James Wan]], dan [[Jim Jarmusch]] mulai membuat namanya di Sundance.
