Gereja ini merupakan anggota [[komunion Ortodoks Timur]] yang independen. Gereja ini didirikan pada tahun 1219 oleh [[Santo Sava]] dengan nama [[Keuskupan Agung Žiča]], dan statusnya lalu diangkat menjadi [[patriarkat]] pada tahun 1346. Patriarkat ini sempat dibubarkan oleh [[Kesultanan Utsmaniyah]] pada tahun 1766. Gereja Ortodoks Serbia modern didirikan kembali pada tahun 1920 setelah disatukannya [[Patriarkat Karlovci]] dengan [[Metropolitanat Beograd]] dan [[Metropolitanat Montenegro]].
