South China Morning Post Ltd didirikan oleh [[Tse Tsan-tai]] dan Alfred Cunningham pada 1903. Edisi lembar pertama diterbitkan pada 6 November 1903.
Dari masa pendiriannya, dari masa [[dinasti Qing]] (dinasti Ching) sampai 1913, satu tahun setelah pendirian [[Republik Tiongkok]], surat kabar tersebut dikenal, dalam bahasa Mandarin, sebagai 《南清早報》 (''Nánqīng Zǎobào'', ''South Ching Morning Post'').
