Pada 21 Oktober 2021, ketika pengambilan gambar di tempat pengambilan gambar film Rust di Bonanza Creek Ranch, sinematografer Halyna Hutchins terbunuh dan sutradara Joel Souza terluka di lokasi pengambilan gambar film Rust setelah aktor Alec Baldwin menembakkan senjata api properti yang diserahkan kepadanya oleh asisten sutradara Dave Halls. Penulis dan sutradara Joel Souza menyusun cerita untuk Rust bersama aktor dan produser Alec Baldwin. Film koboi diproduksi dengan biaya sebesar $6–7 juta dan digambarkan sebagai "proyek yang bergairah" bagi Alec. Hak distribusi film ini terjual seharga $2 juta semasa tahap praproduksi.[1][2] Akibat biaya yang rendah, produksi film hanya memiliki sumber daya yang terbatas dan jadwal pengambilan gambar yang ketat selama 21 hari.[1][3] Pengambilan gambar dimulai pada 6 Oktober 2021 di Bonanza Creek Ranch, Bonanza City, New Mexico, sebuah kota hantu yang terletak di dekat Santa Fe.[4]

Anak perempuan dari koordinator senjata industri Thell Reed yaitu Hannah Gutierrez-Reed bertanggung jawab untuk mengawasi semua senjata di lokasi pengambilan gambar produksi film ini. It was Gutierrez-Reed's second film serving as lead armorer after The Old Way, where she had reportedly handed a weapon to child actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong without properly checking it. In September 2021, Reed said loading a prop gun with blank cartridges was "the scariest thing" to her.[5][6]

Keluhan keamanan dan pemogokan sunting

Permulaan produksi Rust terjadi saat potensi pemogokan oleh anggota International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees atas kondisi kerja dan upah rendah. Pada 4 Oktober, anggota IATSE diumumkan memberikan suara mendukung pemogokan sebesar 98,68% dengan keikutsertaan 89,66% dari pemilih yang memenuhi syarat.[7] Sinematografer Halyna Hutchins mendukung IATSE dan berencana untuk mengikuti mogok atas kondisi kerja yang berbahaya beberapa hari sebelum kematiannya.[8] Ia menulis dalam sebuah status di Instagram, "Standing in #IAsolidarity with our @IATSE crew here in New Mexico on RUST."[9]

Pada 21 Oktober, tujuh anggota serikat pekerja dari kru kamera Rust mulai mengemasi barang-barang mereka sekitar pukul 6:30 pagi MT dalam sebuah pemogokan.[4] Mereka disuruh meninggalkan lokasi pengambilan gambar dengan produser mengancam akan memanggil polisi dan digantikan oleh empat anggota bukan serikat pekerja.[10] According to a statement given to TheWrap by an anonymous insider, several crew members took a number of prop guns off-set that day, including the firearm involved in the incident, to pass the time shooting at beer cans with live ammunition.[13] After a lunch break, the prop guns had been returned.[13] It is not clear if the firearms were checked again.[3] On October 26, the Santa Fe County district attorney said these claims were still unconfirmed.[14]

Pada 21 Oktober 2021, di Bonanza Creek Ranch, three guns used as props were placed on a cart by Reed. Among them were a plastic gun that could not shoot live bullets, a modified weapon that could not fire any type of bullets, and a large Colt .45 revolver.[15] The latter was selected by Halls, who handed it to Baldwin before announcing it was a "cold gun" to inform the rest of the crew that it was empty.[16][17] It was the twelfth day of a 21-day shoot, and the cast was rehearsing a gunfight that takes place inside of a church. Camera operator Reid Russell was situated on a camera dolly, looking at a monitor with Hutchins and Souza both nearby. The scene involved Baldwin's character removing a gun from its holster and pointing it towards the camera.[3]

While the trio behind the monitor were repositioning the camera to remove a shadow, Baldwin began explaining to the crew how he planned to draw the firearm.[3] When he removed it from the holster, at approximately 1:50 p.m. MT, the prop gun discharged a single time and the projectile flew towards the trio behind the monitor, striking Hutchins in the chest and Souza in the clavicle.[4][16][18][19] The incident was not caught on camera.[15]

Hutchins was flown by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she was pronounced dead.[20] Souza was driven by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, where he was treated and released by the following morning.[21] Baldwin was questioned and released without charges filed. According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, they have begun investigating "what type of projectile was discharged" and how the event occurred.[22][23][20]

As a result of the incident, production on Rust was suspended indefinitely.[20]

Pada 22 Oktober 2021, Alec memuat cuitan yang menyatakan kekagetan dan kesedihannya mengenai kecelakaan tragis yang merenggut nyawa Halyna Hutchins.
