Alexander Vasiliev (sejarawan)

Alexander Alexandrovich Vasiliev (Rusia: Александр Александрович Васильев) (1867–1953) adalah sejarawan Romawi Timur dan budaya pada pertengahan abad ke-20. Karyanya yang berjudul History of the Byzantine Empire (vol. 1-2, 1928) merupakan salah satu catatan sejarah Romawi Timur yang paling komprehensif.

Vasiliev belajar dari ahli Romawi Timur Vasily Vasilievsky di Universitas St Petersburg dan nantinya mengajar bahasa Arab di situ. Antara tahun 1897 hingga 1900, ia melanjutkan pendidikannya di Paris. Pada tahun 1902, ia menemani Nicholas Marr dalam perjalanannya ke Biara Santa Katarina di Sinai.

Selama menetap di Universitas Tartu (1904–12), Vasiliev mempersiapkan dan menerbitkan monograf Byzantium and the Arabs (1907). Ia juga bekerja di Institut Arkeologi Rusia yang didirikan oleh Fyodor Uspensky di Konstantinopel. Pada tahun 1912, ia pindah ke Universitas St. Petersburg sebagai seorang profesor. Ia terpilih menjadi anggota Akademi Sains Rusia pada tahun 1919.

Pada tahun 1925, selama kunjungannya ke Paris, Vasiliev diyakinkan oleh Michael Rostovtzeff untuk beremigrasi ke Barat. Rostovtzeff memastikan bahwa ia akan mendapat jabatan di Universitas Wisconsin–Madison. Beberapa dasawarsa kemudian, Vasiliev pindah ke Dumbarton Oaks. Sebelum akhir hayatnya, ia terpilih menjadi Presiden Institut Nikodim Kondakov di Praha dan Association Internationale des Études Byzantines.
