Ostia Antica
Ostia Antica adalah sebuah situs arkeologi yang terletak di dekat kota Ostia. Situs ini terletak sekitar 25 km di sebelah barat daya kota Roma. Pada zaman Romawi Kuno, kota ini terletak di mulut Sungai Tiber dan merupakan pelabuhan laut Romawi, tetapi akibat perubahan geografis kota ini kini terletak sejauh 3 km dari laut.[2]

Asal mula sunting
Sebuah inskripsi menunjukkan bahwa sebuah kastrum didirikan di Ostia pada abad ke-7 SM. Sementara itu, peninggalan arkeologi tertua yang ditemukan di Ostia berasal dari abad ke-4 SM.[3]
Ostia mungkin merupakan colonia pertama Romawi. Menurut legenda Ancus Marcius, ia adalah orang pertama yang menghancurkan kota kuno Ficana yang terletak sejauh 17 km dari kota Roma dan memiliki pelabuhan kecil di Sungai Tiber. Ia lalu mendirikan koloni baru 10 km di sebelah barat kota tersebut, dan koloni baru ini terletak lebih dekat dengan wilayah pesisir.

The ancient Roman city of Ostia was in antiquity situated at the mouth of the river Tiber, some 30 km (19 mil) to the west of Rome. The shoreline moved seawards, due to silting, from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. Therefore Ostia is today still lying next to the Tiber, but at a distance of some three kilometres (1,9 mil) from the beach. Ostia is Latin for "mouth", the mouth of the Tiber. The river was used as harbour, but in the Imperial period two harbour basins were added to the north, near Leonardo da Vinci airport. The harbour district was called Portus, Latin for "harbour".
