Messier 81 atau M81 dikenal juga dengan NGC 3031 atau Galaksi Bode merupakan galaksi spiral yang berjarak sekitar 12 juta tahun cahaya dari bumi, yang berada rasi bintang Ursa Mayor. Karena jaraknya yang relatif dekat dengan Bumi, ukurannya yang besar, serta inti galaksi aktif (yang memiliki lubang hitam supermasif dengan massa 70 juta M),[8] Messier 81 telah dipelajari secara ekstensif oleh para astronom profesional, serta menjadi target yang populer bagi astronom amatir.[9]

Penemuan sunting

Messier 81 ditemukan pertama kali oleh Johann Elert Bode pada tahun 1774.[10] Akibatnya galaksi ini kadang disebut "Galaksi Bode". Pada tahun 1779, Pierre Méchain dan Charles Messier kembali mengidentifikasikan objek tersebut dan memasukkannya dalam katalog.[10]

Emisi debu sunting

Warna biru mewakili emisi bintang yang diamati pada 3,6 μm.[11] Warna hijau mewakili emisi yang diamati pada 8 μm yang berasal terutama dari hidrokarbon aromatik polisiklik dalam medium antarbintang.[11] Warna merah mewakili emisi yang diamati pada 24 μm yang berasal dari debu panas di medium antarbintang.[12]

Sebagian besar dari emisi pada panjang gelombang inframerah berasal dari debu kosmik.[12][13] Debu kosmik ini ditemukan terutama di dalam lengan spiral galaksi, dan telah terbukti berhubungan dengan daerah pembentukan bintang.[12][13]

Supernova sunting

Hanya satu supernova yang telah terdeteksi di Messier 81.[14] Supernova yang dinamai SN 1993J, ditemukan pada 28 Maret 1993 oleh F. Garcia di Spanyol.[15] Pada saat itu, supernova tersebut merupakan supernova paling terang kedua yang di temukan pada abad ke-20.[16] Karakteristik spektrum supernova tersebut berubah dari waktu ke waktu. Pada awalnya menyerupai supernova tipe II (supernova yang terbentuk dari ledakan bintang raksasa) yang memiliki emisi garis spektrum hidrogen yang kuat, namun kemudian garis spektrum hidrogen memudar dan muncul garis spektrum helium yang kuat, membuat supernova tersebut menyerupai supernova tipe IB.[16][17] Selain itu, variasi dalam luminositas SN 1993J dari waktu ke waktu tidak seperti variasi yang diamati pada supernova tipe II lainnya[18][19] tetapi lebih menyerupai variasi yang diamati pada jenis supernova Ib.[20] Oleh karena itu, supernova ini telah diklasifikasikan sebagai tipe IIb, kelas peralihan antara tipe II dan tipe Ib.[17] Hasil ilmiah dari supernova ini menunjukkan bahwa supernova jenis Ib dan Ic sebenarnya terbentuk melalui ledakan bintang raksasa melalui proses yang sama dengan yang terjadi pada supernova tipe II.[17][21]
