State of California
California is a state on the West Coast of USA, with the largest population in the country.
If California was an independent country, it'd occupy the 6th to 9th economic position in the world. It's also the most diverse state in the USA, and it's official nickname is The Golden State. That comes in part from its history of the 1849 Gold Rush but also from the golden grass in the dry season. The abbreviations are CA for post and Calif for Associated Press
California gives major impetus to the American culture and economy, contributing improvements in technology and law. It also pays more into the Federal Welfare system than it receives. It has some of the biggest and most important cities in the USA including Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.
GEOGRAPHY
California borders on the Pacific Ocean, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and the Mexican state of Baja California. California has beautiful nature featuring a broad central valley, tall mountains, hot desert and thousands of miles of coastline. Measuring 410,000km²
picturesque it's the 3rd largest state in the USA. Most of the big cities are located on the balmy Pacific Coast, the most famous being Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Long Beach and San Diego. However the state's capital city, Sacramento, is located in the Central Valley. And the 6th largest city, Fresno, is located in the San Joaquin Valley.
California has a greatly varied geography. The Central Valley is located in the center of the state, a large,temperate and fertile area,
bordered by coastal mountain ranges to the west, the Sierra Nevadas to the east, the volcanic Cascade Range to the north and the Tehachapi mountains to the south. Rivers, dams and canals provide water to irrigate the Central Valley By dredging, some waterways are big and deep enough so inland cities, especially Stockton, have become ports.
The Sierra Nevadas are in the states middle and east, where the USA's highest mountain is found, Mt. Whitney with a height of 4,421m. The world-famous Yosemite National Park is there too, as well as the sweetwater Lake Tahoe, the biggest in the state by volume. In the eastern Sierras is Owens Valley and Mono Lake, an important bird habitat. To the west is Clear Lake, the largest sweetwater lake in California by surface area.
The Transverse Ranges lie to the south with a big briny lake, the Salton Sea. The south-central desert is called the Mojave. Death Valley lies to the east of the lake, the very hottest place in all of North America. The lowest place, Death Valley, and the highest place, Mt. Whitney, are less than 200 miles away. Hiking treks between the two spots have been attempted, several times, most recently by Lee Bergthold.
California is famous for its earthquakes, due to the San Andreas Fault. Although the biggest earthquakes happened in Alaska and the longest in Mississippi, California quakes are famous since they're very frequent and close to highly populated areas depicting California destroyed by earthquake include some people believe eventually a great earthquake will cause the destruction of the California coast as a continent, so it will sink into the sea or develop into a new land. The reality of this scenario is it's actually not likely from the geological point of view, but that's not to discount public opinion, and production of science-fiction and fantasy that often exploit this possibility. Well-known films depicting California destroyed by earthquake include Earthquake, A View to Kill, Escape from L.A. and Superman.
California is also home to several volcanoes, several of them active such as Mt. Mammoth. Other volcanoes include Lassen Peak that erupted from 1914 to 1921, and Mt. Shasta
