Pada tahun 1960, ketika [[laser]] diperkenalkan, [[Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures|Konferensi Umum tentang Berat dan Ukuran]] (Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures/CGPM) ke-11 mengganti definisi meter sebagai 1.650.763,73 kali panjang gelombang spektrum cahaya oranye-merah [[atom]] [[krypton]]-86 dalam sebuah ruang [[vakum]]. Pada tahun 1983, BIPM menetapkan meter sebagai jarak yang dilalui [[cahaya]] melalui vakum pada 1/299.792.458 detik (kecepatan cahaya ditetapkan sebesar 299.792.458 meter per detik). Oleh karena [[kecepatan cahaya]] dalam vakum adalah sama di manapun saja, definisi ini lebih universal dibandingkan dengan jarak ukurlilit [[bumi]] atau panjang batang logam tertentu. Oleh karena itu, jika batang logam itu hilang atau musnah, panjang meter standar masih dapat diulangi dalam laboratorium manapun. Selain itu ia secara teori dapat diukur dengan lebih tepat dibandingkan dengan ukuran yang lain.
