Museum ini bertempat di Istana Louvre ''(Palais du Louvre)'' yang awalnya merupakan benteng yang dibangun pada abad ke-12 di bawah pemerintahan [[Philippe II dari Perancis|Philip II]]. Sisa-sisa benteng dapat dilihat di ruang bawah tanah museum. Bangunan ini diperluas beberapa kali hingga membentuk Istana Louvre yang sekarang ini. ''Académie'' tetap di Louvre selama 100 tahun berikutnya. Selama [[Revolusi Perancis]], Majelis Nasional Perancis menetapkan bahwa Louvre harus digunakan sebagai museum untuk menampilkan karya-karya bangsa.
Museum ini dibuka pada tanggal [[10 Agustus]] [[1793]] dengan memamerkan 537 [[lukisan]]. Mayoritas karya tersebut diperoleh dari properti gereja dan kerajaan yang disita Pemerintah Perancis. Karena masalah struktural dengan bangunan, museum ditutup pada tahun 1796 hingga 1801. Jumlah koleksi museum meningkat di bawah pemerintahan [[Napoleon Bonaparte|Napoleon]] dan museum berganti nama menjadi ''Musée Napoléon''. Setelah kekalahan Napoleon dalam [[Pertempuran Waterloo]], sebagian besar karya-karya yang disita oleh pasukannya kembali ke pemilik asli mereka. Koleksi museum ini ditingkatkan lagi selama pemerintahan [[Louis XVIII dari Perancis|Louis XVIII]] dan [[Charles XI dari Swedia|Charles X]], dan selama masa [[Kekaisaran kolonial Perancis|Imperium Perancis Kedua]], museum berhasil memperoleh 20.000 koleksi. Koleksi museum terus bertambah dengan adanya sumbangan dan hadiah yang terus meningkat sejak masa [[Republik Perancis Ketiga]].
