Schweitzer menerima [[penghargaan Nobel]] tahun 1952 untuk bidang perdamaian pada tahun 1953 atas ajaran filosofinya mengenai penghormatan yang tertinggi untuk kehidupan (''reverence of life'' atau ''Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben''). Ajaran filosofi ini sangat jelas diterapkannya melalui pendirian dan pengelolaan Rumah Sakit [[Lambaréné]] di [[Gabon]], Afrika Tengah bagian Barat. Pandangan filosofinya ini terangkum dalam bukunya, ''Filsafat Peradaban''.
