Dalam Shinto keselamatan dicapai melalui pentaatan terhadap semua larangan dan penghindaran terhadap orang atau objek yang mungkin menyebabkan ketidak sucian atau polusi. Persembahyangan dilakukan dan persembahan dibawa ke kuil untuk para Dewa yang dikatakan ada sejumlah 800 miliar di alam semesta. Manusia tidak mempunyai Tuhan tertinggi untuk ditaati, tetapi hanya perlu mengetahui bagaimana menyesuaikan diri dengan Kami dalam berbagai manifestasinya. Kami seseorang tetap hidup setelah kematian, dan manusia biasanya menginginkan untuk berharga dan dikenang dengan baik oleh keturunannya. Oleh karena itu, pemenuhan kewajiban adalah unsur yang paling penting dari Shinto.
