Zacharias dilahirkan di [[Madras]], [[India]]. Zacharias tumbuh dalam keluarga penganut [[Anglikan]] nominal,<ref name=Walking/> dan merupakan seorang [[ateis]] sampai usia 17 tahun, ketika ia gagal bunuh diri dengan minum racun. Pada waktu ia dirawat di rumah sakit, seorang pekerja Kristen dari ''Youth for Christ'' bernama Fred David membawakannya sejilid [[Alkitab]] dan mengatakan kepada ibunya untuk membacakan dari [[Yohanes 14]]. Zacharias berkata bahwa ayat {{Alkitab|Yohanes 14:19}} begitu menyentuhnya dan membuatnya menyerahkan hidupnya kepada [[Kristus]].<ref name=Walking/> Pada tahun 1966 Zacharias dan keluarganya berimigrasi ke [[Kanada]], dan ia meraih gelar sarjana dari Ontario Bible College pada tahun 1972 (sekarang [[:en:Tyndale University College & Seminary|Tyndale University College & Seminary]]) serta gelar [[:en:Masters of Divinity|M. Div.]] dari [[:en:Trinity International University|Trinity International University]].

Zacharias diundang untuk melewatkan musim panas tahun 1971 di [[Vietnam]], di mana ia mengabarkan Injil kepada tentara-tentara Amerika Serikat, juga para tawanan perang dan [[Viet Cong]].<ref name=Walking/> Setelah lulus dari [[:en:Tyndale University College and Seminary|Ontario Bible College]], ia mulai pelayanan itineran pada [[:en:Christian and Missionary Alliance|Christian and Missionary Alliance di Kanada]].<ref name=Walking/> Pada tahun 1974 C&MA mengutusnya ke [[Kamboja]], di mana ia hanya sempat memberitakan Injil sebentar sebelum negara itu jatuh ke tangan [[Khmer Merah]].<ref name=Walking/> Pada tahun 1977, setelah lulus dari Trinity, Zacharias diutus untuk berbicara di seluruh dunia.<ref name=Walking/>
