Bencana dimulai ketika sedang dilakukan pengujian sistem tanggal 26 April 1986 di reaktor nomor 4 pembangkit Chernobyl yang letaknya dekat [[Pripyat]] dan dekat dengan perbatasan administratif dengan [[Belarusian SSR|Belarus]] dan Sungai [[Dnieper]].
