Di masa penghujung kariernya, Vonnegut menerbitkan beberapa koleksi esai otobiografis dan koleksi cerita pendek, seperti ''[[Fates Worse Than Death]]'' (1991) dan ''[[A Man Without a Country]]'' (2005). Baru setelah kematiannyalah Vonnegut disanjung sebagai seorang pengamat-penulis yang kritis, ironis, dan gelap, namun tak menyingkirkan tempatnya sebagai salah satu penulis dunia kontemporer yang paling berpengaruh.
