Pada saat Perang Pasifik dimulai, ia tergabung ke dalam DesDiv 9 sebagai kapal flagship dari divisi tersebut dibawah komando Sato Yasuo. Mereka turut andil dalam invasi ke Filipina dan Hindia Belanda. Pada Pertempuran Selat Badung, ia turut andil dalam menenggelamkan kapal perusak Inggris HMS Electra akan tetapi menerima tembakan dan mengalami kerusakan berat sehingga harus diperbaiki darurat di Balikpapan sebelum diperbaiki total di Yokosuka.

Pada Juni 1944, ia tergabung ke dalam Armada Ozawa dalam Pertempuran Laut Filipina, akan tetapi ia ditarik dari armada akibat masalah bahan bakar dan berlayar menuju Okinawa dan Hashirajima. Ia kembali ke Manila pada bulan Juli sebelum kemudian ke Brunei pada bulan Oktober dan bergabung ke dalam Armada Nishimura.
Ia mengakhiri karirnya yang panjang di Pertempuran Selat Surigao pada tanggal 25 Oktober 1944. Pada pertempuran tersebut ia terkena torpedo dari USS McDermut dan tembakan dari armada Amerika. Ia tenggelam dan 39 krunya termasuk Komandan Shibayama Kazuo diselamatkan oleh Armada Amerika.
