Setelah itu, sebagian besar Irlandia lepas dari Britania Raya untuk menjadi [[Negara Bebas Irlandia]] yang independen; bagian sisanya, [[Irlandia Utara]], masih memilih untuk menjadi bagian dari Britania Raya. Baik Negara Bebas maupun Britania Raya, yang mengubah namanya menjadi [[Kerajaan Bersatu Britania Raya dan Irlandia Utara]] pada 1927, memiliki penguasa monarki yang sama: [[George V]]. Pada 1937, setahun setelah George V wafat, Negara Bebas mengadopsi [[Bunreacht na hÉireann|konstitusi baru]] yang mengubah nama negaranya menjadi ''Irlandia'' (atau ''[[Éire]]'') dan menghapus seluruh sebutan penguasa monarki. Pada April 1949, ''Irlandia'' dideklarasikan menjadi sebuah republik, dengan deskripsi ''[[Republik Irlandia]]''.
