Leighton adalah putra dari artis [[Charles Blair Leighton]]. Ia belajar di [[University College School]], sebelum menjadi seorang mahasiswa di [[Royal Academy School]]. Ia menikah dengan Katherine Nash di 1885 lalu memiliki seorang putra dan putri.
