Pada hari kemenangannya, sang jenderal mengenakan regalia yang menandakannya sebagai nyaris-dewa atau nyaris-raja dan sebuah mahkota laurel diletakkan di kepalanya. Ia diarak dengan kereta kuda melintasi jalanan Roma dalam prosesi tak bersenjata bersama pasukan dan rampasan perangnya. Di Kuil Jupiter di Bukit Capitoline, ia mempersembahkan pengorbanan dan bukti kemenangannya kepada dewa. Setelah itu, ia berhak menyandang gelar ''vir triumphalis'' ("pria kemenangan", kemudian ganti nama menjadi ''triumphator'') seumur hidupnya. Setelah meninggal dunia, ia diwakili pada pemakamannya sendiri dan keturunan-keturunannya oleh seorang aktor sewaan yang mengenakan [[topeng kematian]] (''imago'') dan mengenakan [[toga picta]] (toga "lukis") kemenangan serba ungu yang dijahit dengan benang emas.
