Ooi lahir di [[Taiping, Perak|Taiping]], [[Malaysia]] dari sebuah keluarga [[suku Hoklo|Hoklo]] yang akrab dengan musikal. Kakeknya, yang merupakan seorang penulis dan pembuat drama, beremigrasi ke Malaysia dari [[Guangdong]], China.
