Sesuai dengan kehendak Alfred Nobel, penerimanya dipilih oleh [[Komite Nobel Norwegia]], sebuah komite lima anggota yang dipilih oleh [[Parlemen Norwegia]]. Sejak 1990, penghargaan tersebut diberikan pada 10 Desember di [[Balai Kota Oslo]] pada setiap tahun. Sebelumnya, penghargaan tersebut diberikan di Atrium [[Fakultas Hukum Universitas Oslo]] (1947–89), [[Institut Nobel Norwegian]] (1905–46), dan [[gedung Storting|Parlemen]] (1901–04).
