Dove Cameron lahir di Seattle, Washington, sebagai Chloe Celeste Hosterman.[6] Ia adalah putri Philip Alan Hosterman dan Bonnie Wallace, yang kemudian bercerai, dan memiliki kakak perempuan, Claire Hosterman. Dia dibesarkan di Pulau Bainbridge, Washington.[7] Ketika ia masih kecil, ia bersekolah di Sakai Intermediate School.[7] Pada usia delapan tahun, ia mulai berakting di teater komunitas di Bainbridge Performing Arts.[8]

Cameron terlibat percintaan dengan lawan main Liv and Maddie, Ryan McCartan dari Agustus 2013 hingga 2016.[14] Mereka mengumumkan pertunangan mereka pada 14 April 2016,[15][16] tetapi hubungan itu berakhir pada Oktober 2016.[17] Cameron menjalin hubungan dengan lawan mainnya di Descendants, Thomas Doherty dari 2017 hingga 2020.[18][19][20]

Pada Mei 2022, Cameron berbicara tentang perjuangannya melawan depresi dan disforia dalam sebuah postingan di Instagramnya.[21][22]
