Cymbospondylus (sebuah kata Yunani yang berarti "perahu tulang belakang") adalah Ichthyosauria basal awal yang hidup diantara periode Trias Tengah dan akhir (240-210 juta tahun yang lalu). Sebelumnya, genus diklasifikasikan sebagai Shastasauridae, tetapi, karya terkini menemukan bahwa reptil ini lebih basal.^[2]

Penemuan sunting

Fosil telah ditemukan di Cekungan Jermanik di pegunungan Alpen selatan dan Nevada, dan spesies pertama dinamai oleh Joseph Leidy pada tahun 1868. Spesies lain tidak dinamai sampai awal tahun 1900an saat kerangka yang lengkap telah ditemukan.

Sejauh ini, spesies yang valid adalah spesies tipe C. piscosus, C. buchseri, C. nichollsi dan C. duelferi.^[1] Spesies lain dideklarasikan entah sebagai sinonim (C. grandis adalah sinonim dari C. piscosus) atau validitasnya diragukan.
