The Fundamentals

The Fundamentals atau The Fundamentals: A Testimony To The Truth adalah satu naskah yang terdiri dari 90 risalah dalam 12 volume yang disunting oleh A. C. Dixon dan kemudian oleh Reuben Archer Torrey dan diterbitkan dari tahun 1910 sampai 1915 oleh Bible Institute of Los Angeles (Biola University). Didesain untuk menguatakan kepercayaan ortodoks Kristen Protestan, khususnya mereka yang dari tradisi Gereja Reformed, dan membela diri terhadap ide-ide yang bertentangan terhadap kepercayaan mereka. Naskah ini umumnya dianggap sebagai landasan Fundamentalisme Kristen modern. Pembuatannya mula-mula dibiayai oleh Lyman Stewart[1] pada tahun 1909[2] untuk menetapkan apa yang mereka yakini sebagai prinsip dasar atau fundamental iman Kristen.[2] Naskah ini dikirim secara cuma-cuma ke para pendeta, misionaris, penilik Sekolah Minggu dan aktivis-aktivis lain dalam pelayanan Kristen.[1]

Lyman Stewart adalah presiden Union Oil Company yang memperhatikan perkembangan modernisme di gereja-gereja Amerika Serikat. Ia berpikir bahwa sebuah dapat memberikan informasi yang banyak. Namun, Stewart menyadari, dirinya bukanlah seorang yang terpelajar. Ketika ia duduk di gereja, ia mendengar berita dari A.C. Dixon, pendeta Moody Church Chicago. Seusai kebaktian, ia memberitahukan idenya pada Dixon untuk mengambil bagian dalam idenya tersebut.

Dixon kemudian membentuk suatu badan yang terdiri dari para pemuka Kristen dan membuka "Perusahaan Penerbitan Testimony".[3] Lyman mendapat bantuan dana dari saudaranya, Milton.[3] Semuanya terkumpul sebanyak 300.000 dollar A.S. bagi proyek tersebut.[3] Guru-guru Alkitab yang terkemuka diminta menulis artikel untuk buklet berseri 128 halaman tersebut.[3] Berbagai artikel tersebut meliputi pokok-pokok doktrin dasar serta isu-isu penting saat itu, seperti Sosialisme, evolusi dan uang.[3] Dixon mengedit lima volume yang pertama dan kemudian pindah ke London.[3] Louis Meyer selanjutnya mengedit lima volume berikutnya sebelum ia meninggal.[3] R.A. Torrey mengedit dua volume terakhir.[3] Akan tetapi, nama kakak-beradik Stewart tidaklah dicantumkan dalam kedua belas volume tersebut. Dalam penerbitannya nama mereka ditulis sebagai “Dua orang Awam Kristen”.[3]

Telah tercetak kira-kira 3 juta eksemplar dalam kurun waktu enam tahun berikutnya, untuk dibagikan kepada setiap pendeta, penginjil, misionaris, mahasiswa teologi, pembina sekolah minggu, sekretaris YMCA atau YWCA.[3] Buku ini pun dikirim ke luar negeri, sebagian besar ke Inggris.[3] Tahun 1910 hingga 1915, dua belas buku kecil yang berjudul "The Fundamentals" inilah yang dikirim secara cuma-cuma di Amerika Serikat.[4] Buku ini berusaha menguraikan berbagai kebenaran dasariah dari kepercayaan Kristen Protestan, misalnya Keilahian Yesus Kristus, karya penebusan-Nya, kebangkitan-Nya, dan kedatangan kembali-Nya serta pengilhaman dan wibawa Alkitab.[4]
