Corey lahir di Broadlawns Medical Center di Des Moines, Iowa. Ia dibesarkan oleh neneknya dalam kemiskinan. Ketika ia masih remaja ia tunawisma - ia hidup di jalanan, Des Moines tidur di bawah jembatan. Pada masa mudanya Taylor tampil di band lokal Stone Sour, yang ia bersama-didirikan pada tahun 1992, dan kembali bersama dengan gitaris rithym Slipknot, James Root, selama kebangkitan pada tahun 2002. Pada akhir 2000 Taylor telah didekati oleh anggota Stone Sour, Josh Rand tentang memulai kembali band dan merekam materi baru. Meskipun rencana tidak berarti apa-apa saat ini (seperti Taylor kembali ke studio untuk merekam dengan Slipknot Iowa) mereka kembali terbentuk ketika Slipknot beristirahat pada tahun 2002, dan tahun yang sama direkam dan dirilis self-titled mereka berjudul Debut Stone Sour . Corey tur bersama Stone Sour pada tahun 2002 dan 2003.
